Post Primary Teaching
As a post primary teacher, I strive to provide my students with a variety of art and design based knowledge and skills in order to express themselves and their ideas. Over the course of the two placements I taught a wide range of media which included elements of peer learning through group work, literacy and numeracy strategies, AFl strategies and use of modern technology.
Critical and contextual studies have grown in their importance in art education and also tie in with
the previous theme as they allow learners to understand ways of higher order and conceptually
thinking and can be inspired by other artists (Parker, 2009, p. 279).
I made sure to vary the support study artists as much as possible this year including artists from
different backgrounds, of different gender and even invited one of my friends who is a practicing
artist in to speak to a class. As this peer and artist, Niall O'Loughlin, is also a teacher, he was able
to give a relevant and inspiring discussion to learners which helped them to contextualise
their work and presented them with the idea of art as a career.
